What Was He Thinking?

I'm more than a little shocked over the whole implosion of John Edwards. I really thought of him as a stand up guy who I could easily have voted for had my first choice not won the nomination. I was still hoping against all hope he'd end up our new and improved Attorney General.

Guess not.

What I find the most astounding is that, apparently, his family has known about this whole thing since 2006. And he and they decided, despite this time bomb waiting in a dark corner of his life, that he still should run for the Democratic nomination. This is self-absorbtion at the highest possible level. No thought of his supporters, his staff, or his party in this decision. No thought of what this might do to the party's chances should he win the nomination and this whole thing come out as it inevitably would. Incredibly self-centered. And, honestly, I would have thought his wife, who has always struck me as the eminently sensible one of the two Edwards, would have stopped him from even starting. That she didn't is even more disappointing than her husband's actions. How did she ever rationalize endangering her pet cause of universal health care to cater to her husband's delusions of grandeur?
